Guardian Home Program

At Blue Ridge Delightful Doodles, our Guardian Home Program is a unique heartfelt partnership built on trust, communication, and a shared love for Australian Labradoodles. Guardian Families welcome one of our future breeding dogs into their home as a beloved companion, while helping us thoughtfully grow our program with care and intention.

Our guardian families play a vital role by providing our dogs full, enriched lives as a cherished family member, while allowing us to continue raising healthy, well-tempered Australian Labradoodles for future generations and families.

What is a Guardian Home?

A guardian home is a loving family who raises one of our breeding dogs as their own family pet. Your dog lives with you full-time, enjoys life as a cherished companion, and only returns to us for short, scheduled visits related to breeding. Once his or her breeding career is complete, he or she remains with you forever as your family dog.

Who Is a Good Fit for a Guardian Home?

Guardian families are families who are commited to raising a dog as a loved companion while remaining connected with us throughout their dog’s breeding journey. A great guardian home is one that can provide a consistent, loving environment and feels comfortable staying in touch with us as part of our program.

Because this program is a partnership, we also understand that a guardian arrangement is not the right fit for every family. We thoughtfully place our guardian dogs in homes that align well with the needs of our program, the dog, and the family, so that everyone involved has the best possible experience.

To ensure the best experience for our dogs and families, guardian homes must be located within 1 hour driving distance from our home. This helps keep transitions calm and allows us to provide timely support when needed.

Guardian families are :

  • Located within a reasonable driving distance of our home
  • Able to provide a safe, loving home environment
  • Comfortable following health, nutrition, and care guidelines
  • Willing to communicate openly and reliably
  • Delighted to be part of our extended Blue Ridge Family.

What Does Blue Ridge Provide?

As your breeder, we remain actively involved and fully support our guardian famlies throughout the program. We take care of all breeding-related responsibilities and expenses, and we are always available as a resource for questions, guidance, and support.

We provide:

  • All breeding-related veterinary care and expenses
  • Health Testing and reproductive care
  • Coordination of breeding and whelping schedules
  • Ongoing guidance and communication
  • Supprt with grooming, nutrition, and general care
  • A lifelong relationship with your breeder

To ensure the best fit for both our dogs and families, guardian dogs are thoughtfully selected by the breeder based on temperament, structure, program needs, and family lifestyle. Families are welcome to share a preference for a male or female when possible, but placement decisions are ultimately made by the breeder in the best interest of the dog and our program.

When  your guardian dog is expecting a litter, she will return to us approximately one week before her due date so we can prepare for whelping in a calm, familiar environment. We handle the entire whelping process and all the care of the puppies from birth until they go home allowing your dog to focus on being a mother while receiving attentive, around-the-clock care from us.
While your dog is with us for whelping and early puppy care, we’ll share updates and photos so you can stay connected. We handle all aspects of the process, allowing families to simply enjoy watching this special time unfold from a distance.
We understand that time apart can feel long, especially when your dog is an important part of your family. For the well-being of the Mom and her puppies, our focus during whelping and early puppy care is to maintain a calm, consistent environment with minimal disruption. For this reason, in-person visits are limited and scheduled at the breeder’s discretion.
When appropriate and when it is in the best interest of the Mom and her litter, we may offer brief, pre-arranged visits. However, visits are not guaranteed and are always guided by the needs of the Mom and puppies first. This approach allows us to provide the safest, most peaceful start for the litter while ensuring your dog receives attentive, dedicated care throughout her stay.

What Guardian Families Provide

Guardian families provide the daily love, care, and stability that allow our dogs to thrive in a family setting. As a guardian family, you raise your dog as a cherished companion and play an important role in their development, training, and socialization.

Guardian families are responsible for:

  • Providing a safe, loving home environment
  • Daily care, training, and socialization
  • Routine veterinary care and vaccinations
  • Quality nutrition and regular grooming
  • Transportation for scheduled breeding-related visits
  • Open, ongoing communication with us as the Breeder

After Retirement

When your guardian dog completes their breeding career, they will be spayed or neutered  at our expense and will remain with you as a beloved family companion.
The timing of spay or neuter is typically completed shortly after the dog’s final breeding, and is ultimately determined by our program veterinarian and breeding plan, and is scheduled to support the long-term health and well-being of your dog. Once your dog is officially retired and altered, full ownership is transferred to you, and all breeding-related responsibilities conclude.

Retirement is a joyful milestone, not a goodbye. It’s the moment when the focus shifts entirely back to everyday life, quiet mornings, cozy evenings, and all the little moments that make a dog part of your family. We remain just as connected and available for support for the lifetime of your dog.

Breeding timelines vary based on the individual dog’s health, structure, temperament, and veterinary guidance.
In general, female guardian dogs are part of our program for a limited number of carefully planned litters, while male guardian dogs may participate for a longer period of time and on a less predictable schedule. Our priority is always the health, happiness, and well-being of each dog, and no dog is bred beyond what is appropriate for them individually.

How Do Families Apply?

If you’re interested in learning more about our Guardian Home Program, we invite you to reach out through our contact form or submit a Guardian Home Application. We take time to thoughtfully review each inquiry and will be in touch to discuss next steps if it feels like a good fit for both your family and our program.
There is no obligation to move forward – our goal is simply to connect, answer questions, and explore whether this partnership is the right fit for everyone involved.

Guardian Home Program FAQs

What is a Guardian Home?

A Guardian Home is a loving family that partners with us to raise one of our breeding dogs as part of their family. The dog lives full-time with the guardian family as a family companion, while we retain ownership and breeding rights during the dog’s breeding career. Once the dog retires, and has spay or neuter surgery full ownership transfers to the guardian family.

What are the benefits of becoming a Guardian Family?

Guardian families receive a beautiful, health-tested dog at a significantly reduced cost, along with ongoing support throughout the breeding period. A non-refundable Guardian Commitment Fee is required once accepted into the program. Full details are provided upon acceptance. All breeding-related health testing, reproductive care, and spay or neuter at retirement are covered by us.
In return, you become a meaningful part of our porogram and the future generations of Blue Ridge Delightful Doodles – helping us thoughtfully and ethically grow while raising a cherished family companion of your own.

Can we choose a male or female guardian dog?

Guardian placements are determined primarily by the needs of our breeding program, along with temperament, structure, and home compatibility. While families may share preferences, placement decisions are made based on what best supports the long-term success and stability of our program and the individual dog.

What if my guardian dog does not pass health testing?

If a guardian dog does not pass required health testing, they are removed from the breeding program and will be spayed or neutered at our expense. At that point, full ownership transfers to the guardian family as a companion pet.
A $3,500 companion pet fee will be due at that time, minus the Guardian Commitment Fee already paid. This reflects the dog’s value as a family companion and the investment already made in their care and development.

Who pays for veterinary care?

Guardian families are responsible for routine care such as food, grooming, and regular wellness visits. All breeding-related veterinary care, health testing, reproductive care, and spay or neuter at retirement are fully covered by us.

How far do we need to live from you?

Guardian families must live within a reasonable driving distance of Carroll County, Virginia to allow for scheduled visits, health testing, and breeding-related care. Exact distance requirements may vary based on the dog’s role in the program.

Can we visit the mom and her puppies?

During whelping and early puppy care, we share regular updates and photos so families can stay connected. To protect the health and well-being of our moms and puppies, in-person visits during this time are limited and scheduled only when appropriate, at the breeder’s discretion. Brief pre-arranged visits may be offered, but are not guaranteed and are always guided by the needs of the mom and her litter.

How often will my guardian dog need to visit you?

Visits are scheduled in advance and vary depending on the dog’s role in the program. These may include breeding, health testing, or evaluations. Our goal is always to make visits smooth and stress-free for the dog.

How does the guardian experience differ for males and females?

Female guardian dogs typically visit us for planned breeding, prenancy, whelping, and puppy raising, which may involve longer stays at our home during those periods.
Male guardian dogs live full-time with their guardian family but may be needed for breeding more frequently and sometimes on shorter notice, depending on timing and female availability. These visits are typically brief, and we work closely with guardian families to coordinate schedules whenever possible.

How long is a dog part of the Guardian Program?

Each dog’s timeline is based on their individual health, temperament, and veterinary guidance. Most guardian dogs participate in the program for several years before retiring.

What happens when my guardian dog retires?

When your guardian dog completes their breeding career, they are spayed or neutered at our expense and remain with you as your family companion. At that time, full ownership transfers to you and all breeding-related responsibilities end.

Can I travel or go on vacation?

Yes, We simply ask that you communicate with us in advance so we can coordinate care if needed, especially during breeding windows.

What if our circumstances change during the guardian period?

We ask families to think carefully and intentionally before applying to become a Guardian Home. Guardian dogs are part of our long-term breeding program, and consistency and stability are essential for their well-being and for the success of our program.
While we understand that life can bring unexpected changes, guardian placements are made with the intention that the dog will remain in the same home for the duration of their breeding career whenever possible. Frequent changes or early termination of guardian placements can be disruptive for dogs and represent a significant loss of time and resources invested in their care, training, and development.
If circumstances do change, we will work together to determine the best path forward for the dog, always prioritizing their well-being.

How do I apply to become a Guardian Family?

You can apply directly through our Guardian Home Application. Applications are reviewed carefully, and qualified families will be contacted to discuss next steps.

FAQ’s about Blue Ridge Delightful Doodles

How does your wait-list work?

We maintain a limited reservation list for each planned litter. Once your application is approved, families are invited to review and sign our Companion Puppy Purchase Agreement and Health Guarantee Agreement, and submit a $500 non-refundable reservation deposit.

Reservation placement is based on the date the reservation deposit is received. Submission of the reservation deposit represents the Buyer’s commitment to move forward with the purchase of a puppy, subject only to puppy availability once the litter is born and confirmed.

Following the receipt of the signed agreements and reservation deposit, families are placed on our primary reservation list in  order of deposit date. If the number of puppies born is fewer than the number of reservations received, remaining families are placed on our priority reservation list for the next available puppy or litter.

Only in the event that no puppy is available due to litter size may families on the priority reservation list elect to receive a full refund of their reservation deposit or roll the deposit forward to the next available litter. In all other circumstances, the reservation deposit is non-refundable.

How much are puppies and what's included?

Our Australian Labradoodle puppies are $3,500, which includes your $500 non-refundable reservation deposit

The remaining balance is due when puppies reach six’s weeks of age, as outlined in the agreement and communicted in puppy update emails.

What payment methods do you accept?

Reservation deposits are accepted via Zelle. A cashier’s check or money order may also be mailed.

The remaining balance is due by Zelle transaction or cashier’s check or money order. Personal checks are not accepted for final payment.

Pay pal is not accepted for final balances due to processing fees.

Specific payment instructions and timelines are provided to approved famlies in Birth Announcement email and outlined in our Companion Puppy Purchase Agreement.

When are puppies chosen?

Puppy Asssignments are made after temperament evaluations are completed at 7 weeks old.
Puppies are placed in order of deposit received, and families are notified during the 7-week “Pupdate” email which puppy will be joining their family.
Our focus is always to find the best match for both puppy and family.

What age do puppies go home?

Puppies are ready to go home at 8 weeks of age.
Your “Gotcha Day” — scheduled for the 8th week after birth — is shared in the litter announcement email.

How does puppy selection work?

At 7 weeks of age, we perform temperament evaluations on each puppy.
Using your application and preferences, we thoughtfully select the puppy that best matches your family’s  lifestyle, activity level, and personality — while also considering preferred color or gender.

Because temperament and compatibility come first, we ask families to remain open to a range of colors and gender. This helps place each puppy in a home where they will thrive.

How are families notified of their puppy being born?

Each family on our waitlist will receive a litter announcement email once the puppies arrive.
This email includes:

  • Your Gotcha Day date (8 weeks after birth)

  • Your final payment due date

  • Details about weekly “Pupdates,” where you’ll follow the litter’s progress.

How do I get my puppy?

At this time, we do not ship or fly puppies. All puppies must be picked up in person from our home in Southwest Virginia.
We are conveniently located:

  • 1 hour 30 minutes from Roanoke, VA

  • 2 hours from Charlotte, NC

This ensures your puppy experiences the least amount of stress and a safe, smooth transition into your arms.

How often do Australian Labradoodles need grooming?

Australian Labradoodles have beautiful coats that shed very little, though no dog is ever completely hypoallergenic.

To maintain a healthy coat:

  • Brush daily if possible (or at least 3–4 times a week) to prevent tangles.

  • Schedule professional grooming every 6–8 weeks.

  • Occasional baths are fine, but over bathing can dry out their skin and coat.

Early grooming exposure — which begins with us — helps puppies become confident and comfortable during routine care.

What is a guardian home and does your program offer that?

Yes. As a small, in-home breeding program, we believe every dog deserves to live as part of a loving family — not in a kennel. Our Guardian Home Program allows select families to become permanent homes for one of our breeding dogs while partnering with us for future litters.

Guardian families receive a top-quality breeding prospect at a reduced initial cost and enjoy being part of our extended Blue Ridge Delightful Doodles family.
We are currently accepting Guardian Home applications for upcoming puppies in 2026.

When can I visit the puppies?

To protect the health and safety of our puppies, we do not allow in-person visits until Gotcha Day.
We share weekly photo updates (“Pupdates”) so you can follow their growth and milestones. This minimizes stress and exposure for the young puppies while still keeping families connected and involved.

What sizes are Australian Labradoodles?

Australian Labradoodles come in three sizes:

Size Weight Height (at withers)
Miniature 15–25 lbs 14–16 inches
Medium 25–45 lbs 17–20 inches
Standard 45–65 lbs 21–24 inches

At this time, Blue Ridge Delightful Doodles proudly focuses on the Miniature size — averaging 15–25 lbs and 14–16 inches at the shoulder.

Do you offer a Health Guarantee?

Yes. Every Blue Ridge Delightful Doodles puppy is backed by our two-year genetic health guarantee, as outlined in our Genetic Health Guarantee, which families are required to review and sign prior to submitting a reservation deposit.
Our breeding dogs undergo comprehensive health testing, including OFA evaluations, annual CAER eye eams, cardiac screening, and DNA testing, in accordance with responsible breeding standards.

Blue Ridge Delightful Doodles is committed to ethical, health-focused breeding and follows the testing and breeding guidelines set forth by the Worldwide Australian Labradoodle Association (WALA), which promotes transparency, health testing, and the long-term well-being of the Australian Labradoodle breed.

What is your Spay/Neuter Policy?

All Blue Ridge Delightful Doodles puppies are sold as companions only with no breeding rights.
Our agreement requires spay/neuter by 12 months of age, with veterinary proof submitted to us by that date.
This helps support healthy, ethically bred lines and contributes to preserving the integrity of the Australian Labradoodle breed.
